Who we are

This website is run by the Her Excellency Dr Fatou Bensouda Centre for Human Rights & Justice, with its address at P.O. Box 2070, Kanifing South, The Gambia, West Africa. We are the “controller” of the personal information described in this policy, which means we decide how and why it is used. You can contact us at info@fbensoudahumanrights.org or by post at P.O. Box 2070, Kanifing South, The Gambia, West Africa.

Information we collect

We collect only what we need to run this website and respond to you:

  • Information you give us. If you use the contact form we receive your name, email address, the subject you choose and your message, together with anything else you decide to include. If you email us directly, we receive the contents of your email and your address.
  • Technical information. Like most websites, our web host may automatically record standard technical data such as your IP address, browser type, device and the pages requested. We use this for security and to keep the site working.

We do not ask for special category data (such as information about health, ethnic origin, religion or political opinions) through this website, and we ask that you do not include any in your message unless it is necessary.

How we use your information, and our legal basis

Under The Gambia’s Personal Data Protection and Privacy Act 2025, and any other data protection law that applies to you, we must have a lawful basis for using your personal information. We use it as follows:

  • To read and respond to your enquiry, and to discuss partnerships, collaboration, training, research or other opportunities you raise with us. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interests in communicating with the people who contact us and in carrying out our work. Where it is appropriate, we rely on your consent instead.
  • To keep the website secure and working properly. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interests in protecting the website and its users.
  • To meet our legal and regulatory obligations. Our lawful basis is legal obligation.

We will not send you marketing emails unless you have asked us to or we are otherwise permitted to by law, and we do not sell personal information. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.

Cookies

This website does not currently use cookies or similar technologies for analytics, advertising or tracking. If that changes, we will ask for your consent where the law requires it and update this policy.

Who we share it with

Messages sent through the contact form are handled by a third-party form service, Formspree, which delivers them to our inbox. We may also use service providers for web hosting and email. They act on our instructions and may use your information only to provide their services to us. Where it is needed to deal with your enquiry, we may share it with the members of the Centre’s team who need it to deal with your enquiry. We may also disclose information where the law requires it. We do not sell or rent personal information.

Transfers outside The Gambia

Some of our service providers, such as our form service, web host and email provider, may be located outside The Gambia. Where your information is transferred outside The Gambia, we take the steps required by The Gambia’s Personal Data Protection and Privacy Act 2025 and use appropriate safeguards to protect it. If you contact us from the United Kingdom, the European Union or another country with its own data protection law, we will also take that law into account where it applies to us.

How long we keep it

We keep enquiries only for as long as needed to respond to you, to follow up on any collaboration you have raised, and for reasonable record-keeping. When we no longer need the information, we delete it or anonymise it.

Security

We take appropriate technical and organisational steps to protect personal information. No method of transmission over the internet or of electronic storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your rights

Under The Gambia’s Personal Data Protection and Privacy Act 2025, and any other data protection law that applies to you, you have rights that include the right to:

  • be told how your information is used, and ask for a copy of the information we hold about you;
  • ask us to correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete;
  • ask us to erase your information, or to restrict how we use it, in certain circumstances;
  • object to our use of your information where we rely on legitimate interests;
  • withdraw your consent where we rely on it;
  • ask for your information in a portable format, where this applies.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at info@fbensoudahumanrights.org. There is normally no charge, and we aim to respond within one month. We may need to confirm your identity first.

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, please tell us first at info@fbensoudahumanrights.org or at P.O. Box 2070, Kanifing South, The Gambia, West Africa. You can complain in any way that suits you, and it does not need to be labelled a “data protection complaint”. We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days, investigate it, and keep you informed of the outcome.

You also have the right to complain to the supervisory authority responsible for data protection in The Gambia, which is established under the Personal Data Protection and Privacy Act 2025. If you are in the United Kingdom, the European Union or another country, you may also complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

This website is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through the website. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
